Hi all,

I have cut a 40mm solid oak block worktop and sanded ready for its finish. The wood used has not been finished with any product before. Photo attached.

The worktop is to be used as a desk mostly for myself but I expect that it will take a bit of hammer when the kids do their work at it from time to time.

I am aware that I could either oil or lacquer the worktop. Could anyone who is experienced provide guidance on what would be the best option in this case?

Additionally, some expert tips on getting the finish right would be much appreciated as I plan to apply the finish myself.

Thanks. View media item 42355

Do you have any experience in spraying? if not you could apply pre cat lacquer by brush, apply a coat of sealer, allow to dry, denib with very fine wire wool, apply 3 or 4 coats of pre cat lacquer denibbing each coat, that way you will "body" it up and end up with a lovely finish, I see that you are from the Manchester area? Call in at H Marcel Guests trade counter and they will sell you what you want and give you advice

I would look at the Osmo range and see if there's something suitable there. If it was me I would use an oil.

Hi
I would use Dulux Diamond Glaze . Tough easy to apply and a choice of finish.

You are asking a very broad question and the answer is a personal choice , I would pop into a decorators merchants and look at some samples they may have. Once you have choosen try it out on the underside.
