Hi everyone,

I've pulled up a load of 30cm flags from my back garden where most of them were just laid on sand.

I'm going to be laying a small patio for table and chairs and will be putting new gravel around this area.

I've spent a couple of hours researching laying patios but quite a lot of information is different.

The laying of the flags I can handle, but I'm not sure how I would prepare the base with the condition that it's in.

I will be laying the patio roughly in the middle of this photo, hope you guys can help.

Cheers

Use paving expert as your bible and you will have a top notch job.

IF the ground is well settled as it would be under a former patio then you could chance laying the slabs on a full mortar bed with no sub-base.

To do a real proper job a 100mm compacted sub-base of MOT Type 1 is the order of the day.

First things first you need to remove the sand and any other old laying course then have a look at the sub-grade and make a decision from there.
