I have bought a cheap air conditioning unit, the type with a pipe to pass out of the window, however clearly made for a sash window, where mine hinge.

So could I simply put the pipe into the open fires flue? Would it cause a draft and mess it all up, or would it mean I don't need an open window?

It blows hot air, possibly damp, that will fail to clear your chimney
The hot air will fall back into the room

Well did do it, and yes Tigercubrider was correct, air being damp it did fall back, once the bung removed in AirCon unit and a bowl used to catch the condensate, it worked fine, slow start until flue warmed a bit, then all hot air went up the flue, before pipe to catch condensate a little soot came down, since pipe used no problem.

The Lidi Aircon is rather small, it records using 650 watt, and a large fan so likely less than 600 watt of cooling, it will cool the room, but needs to run all the time, both when hose out of window and when hose up chimney, but it does work better with hose up chimney, likely better sealed. Hind sight needed a bigger unit, and the fan is too noisy, TV does need to be set quite loud, so good that windows are closed.
