Inverters are a tricky one as they vary their output to suit the heat load.. At 100% output, then an inverter is less efficient than a single speed unit but it is rare that a single speed unit will be needed at its full output so this is where the inverter comes into its own... the heat load of rooms are calculated based on the hottest day of the year and the size of a unit is based on this, so the full output of a unit would only needed for a few days of the year...
