air crash air bags...?

talking about airbags did you know that ones in US cars are bigger and more powerful than EU airbags

this is apparently because EU car safety standard only require them to protect occupants wearing seatbelts but the US require them to protect both belted and unbelted occupants

That doesn't sound quite right. I thought airbags without seatbelts were actually more dangerous than no seatbelt or airbag but I might be wrong.

One thing is for sure, there isn't really an excuse for not wearing a belt unless due to car / health reasons.

How about one huge airbag for the plane itself - filled with helium!

just something to soften any impact and to keep you in place in your seats...
they would have the added advantage of keeping the fuselage afloat in the event of a water landing..

The seatbelt and 'brace brace' position do the job ok.

There are several pitfalls to your plan though:
How do you stop them from deploying when the aircraft is going through turbulence?

How would they deploy? The ones in cars actually contain a small amount of explosive (on an aircraft?) Compressed air would be a no-no on an aircraft as well.

Airbags on cars stop you from being flung through the windscreen or smashing your ribs to bits or steering wheel/dashboard. Maybe they could have them in the cockpit?

Plus an impact in a car is probably very different and more predictable than in an aircraft. The sheer bulk of a plane probably absorbs most of the impact whereas a car only has a few inches/feet of metal to take up the 'slack' before the impact reaches the occupant.

i was under the impression that airbags only inflate very briefly. after the first few seconds of the crash they deflate so it would have no effect on a water landing.

also the weight and explosive nature of 500 airbags in a plane would be unworkable IMO.

I've just been watching day of the triffids on BBC iPlayer, and in it one of the passengers of a plane that is going to crash locks himself in the bathroom with about 30 life vests and inflates them all as a cussion to the impending crash..

it got me thinking that it might not be a bad idea..

put air bags into the seats on airplanes that can be inflated in the event of a crash..
they'd have to be more than the momentary ones you get in cars though..

So, you're hurtling towards the ground at 700 mph from 30,000 ft. You are basically inside an oversized cigar tube, with several thousand gallons of highly flammable avgas strapped to each side.

A few airbags are going to save you???????

What drugs are you doing?

Not so far fetched though...

Also..
By Oct. 27 2009, all new commercial aircraft must have seats that are able to withstand a crash of 16 times the force of gravity. That's less force than in a 30 mph head-on car collision, according to AmSafe Inc., the Phoenix company that makes an airbag that fits inside the webbing of the seat belts it already provides in most U.S. airplanes.

And at least they'd muffle the screams...

how about quick setting jelly, the passengers could eat their way out afterwards, first class would get ice cream added

why not compressed gas on a plane? what do you think the oxygen masks are fed with?

the car air bag is deployed so fast because it's an instant crash..
in a plane that's heading to the ground you'd have 30 seconds or so where you could inflate them slowly.. merely as a cusion.

those arm rests and other bits of the seat in front of you are rather hard..

the "brace" position is also no use.. it's intended to preserve your teeth and possible your face so your corpse can be identified..

the lap belt is a waste of time too.. it does more damage than good in a crash..
keeps you in the seat but damages your internal organs.. like being hit in the stomach with a baseball bat..
they'd be better off with at least a 3 point belt like in cars, but a proper harness would be better
