I have a 20 year old system with a Glow worm Hideaway 50b Bf boiler and 8 radiators. I have never had a problem with the boiler but have had the pump replaced 3 times. I have always had a maintenance contract with British Gas.

Several years ago I started getting dreadful roaring sounds which were worse when the system was set to hot water only. Then I started hearing screaming sounds from the pump like 2 pieces of metal colliding at high speed. British Gas told me there was air in the system and it needed flushing. I had it flushed and inhibitor added by an independent firm and it was quiet for a time. Now the car crash sounds have started again, every day.

For some reason the pump was installed under the floorboards in the rear bedroom and the guy from BG said that because of the limited space the pump was installed the wrong way up and this causing it to draw in air.

Is this the likely reason? I rarely believe what I'm told unless other people confirm it and I was worried BG were saying that to persuade me to pay to have it moved. If this is the reason presumably I can solve the problem by moving the pump to near the hot water cylinder.

As I'm disabled I can't check things myself. Your advice would be really appreciated.

he probaby meant it was wrong way up and trapping air in it. get the bg guy back and have him explain thinsgs better to you, or better yet ask for a different bg guy for second opinion.

HI

to begin with pump under floorboards is not a good position
it is also true that if the pump is fitted in the wrong place it can draw air and cause problems.corrosion,etc.your system pipework must be redesigned if the pump is in the wrong place.

Thanks gavinda and lunat. Your help is much appreciated. I'm going to contact British Gas as the last time they replaced the pump they didn't tell me they were putting it in the wrong way up and that might cause problems. Maybe they'll give me a reduced price for resiting the pump :P
