have a vented system and carried out a partial draining to remove some sludge. have refilled but am getting lots of air now. have bled the radiators, but there is still lots of air in around. what's the best way to get this all out? it would seem that there is an air lock in the coil in the hot water cylinder... how do i get rid of it?

That should have its own air bleed point unless it's a gravity system.
Sludgy systems DO take ages to bleed. More desludging required.

get the pump going....demand heating and hot water..should clear...
if not...try downstairs on any drain valve....just open one for 10-20 seconds and you should hear a load of air movement
