Air vent in toilet

I am replastering the kitchen and next door i have a toilet. It has an old metal grill which extracts out to an air brick. Do you think i really need this air flow ? I was thinking about removing the vent and blocking it all up.

Can anyone tell me a good reason why i shouldn't do this ? Lots of toilets dont have an open airflow anymore.
