Hi,
We have a boiler and water tank that were replaced a while back. When the central heating switches to the hot water there is a clang when it switches, nothing when it switches back to heating. Mum says it never used to do this before, but am unsure if its normal for mechanical parts to make noise or if its a problem that needs resolving. She is scared of having to drain the system and mess and stress! Added info the 3 way valve is a Siemens Dv3a.

please show us photographs of the "tank" and what you believe to be a combi boiler. I think it isn't.

There looks to be a motorised valve. They are normally quiet
Is it audible with the door closed?
It probably doesn't need much of a drain even if it is faulty.
Plus little mess

I am not a plumber

Hi, they replaced the Worcester boiler (which is downstairs) and the hot water tank in the airing cupboard before he passed away. The pic shows what we think switches it from heating to hot water which is next to what mum says is the water tank, there is also something in the loft. I dont have pics of the boiler and may be using the wrong terms but Mum says it's a combi boiler. The clunk can be heard outside the airing cupboard and echoes round, the motorised switch moves as the timer goes on and then there is a clunk a moment later.

No it’s not normal, but not unheard of either, sounds like you have a faulty/slipping 3 port valve.
It's a Siemens dva3. Would it cause damage to leave it as it is? Would the whole system need draining to replace the 3 port valve? Thank you

no the DVA3 actuator can be swapped over without a drain down , just put your hand on it and get someone to operate it between modes, you will feel if that is the cause of the noise
