So called penetrating oil rarely penetrates to where its needed.

Most often it lubricates the head which just helps the tool to slip which does nothing to solve the problem.

I sometimes use heat but never oil!

Looks like a very time consuming way to repair a boiler and definetely not a way to earn a living and would leave you in the poor house of old You must have the patience of a saint or a lot of time on your hands

I agree - it took more time than it should have and was patience-testing. Next time it would be a quicker repair and I would probably just buy the new fittings rather than muck around with corroded screws (particularly if it was mid-winter.)

On reflection, it does seem a little crazy that if, for example, the exhaust falls off my car I take it to the garage and have it fixed, but if my boiler develops a leak I try and fix it myself...

you still need to remove both screws to be sure of a leak free repair first time round.

you get your exhausts done at the garage and not yourself?
