Alternative to TRVs ??

I've got a leaky TRV and am wondering if there's any reason I couldn't replace it with a regular globe valve or something of the kind. All I really need is something allowing three settings: full off, medium, full on.

What do you think?

There is no such thing as a radiator setting medium.
