Has anyone any ingenious, thinking-out-of-the-box ideas for an alternative to a car lift?

We don't have access to a pit nor decent high-level ramps.

We're replacing gearbox, or rather rear-engine work, on a rear-wheel drive BMW and normal height axle-stands don't give enough clearance. We had use of a lift whilst dismantling but that option is no longer available sadly.

I'm thinking the only solution is to remove the engine, fix cam-chain etc, replace gearbox and slide the whole thing back into place as a single unit.

The ceiling joists aren't strong enough to winch a car from unfortunately.

Thanks

Front up on stands, hoist to take the engine and 'box out in one go.
I'm thinking, engine out is the way to. There are lift hire companies near me but not mobile, if there is such a thing and, very pricy. Everything is easily replaceable except the aircon re-gassing.
Cheers

Just buy a can of gas from Halfords and do it yourself.
I used a can to recharge mine after doing a pipe repair two and a half years ago.
The thermometer in the ashtray is showing that it's blowing air at 5.2°C.
That picture was taken three weeks ago.
