Got a glowworm fuelsaver 50b mk2, 1980's I think. On a y plan system. Had one thermocouple changed in the last 11 Years. A couple of months ago the RCD tripped and was found to be the pump. Heating Engineer fitted new pump and honeywell diverter valve £310 (the old one had stuck some years earlier, no HW). Then the pilot kept cutting out and he fitted a new overheat stat £75. All was fine for a few weeks. Then the boiler started cutting out more and more frequently one week, then a couple of days then 3-4 x a day.

Currently we light the pilot and boiler, which will run for a somthing like 15-45 mins before cutting out. The boiler outer casing gets hot, the rads are hot. The burner fires continuously, I do remember it firing and stopping and repeating this cycle before. There is no kettling in the boiler, it used to do this sometimes before the new pump was fitted.

I am getting a bit fed up and my trust in this HEng. running thin given he advised me to keep the boiler a couple of years ago and ive just spent £385 on this system.

I have to get the full story tonight, my girlfriend didnt understand the eng, except he said we need a new boiler.

Any pointers as to what may be the problem would really help inform me before I speak to the Engineer.

It's a very simple boiler.
Could be the thermocouple so worth changing this as they cost only a few pounds.
Probably the gas valve solenoid it will probably want a new gas valve unless the solenoid can be bought separately.

You cant win in this job, tell people to keep a relic going and when it breaks down eventually its your fault. or tell them to replace it with a new boiler then your a rip off merchant
£310 of that money spent on your system was on external controls that would of needed replacing new boiler or not. So in 11 years you have spent just £75 on new boiler parts. Not bad if you ask me.
Stop giving your engineer grief for your crappy old boiler, at least he didnt try and mug you off with the "you need a new boiler" crap straight away.
