Last summer I spent a long time looking at which policies had been successful across Europe.

It would be a minimum security with decent facilities. More like a holiday camp you can't leave than a prison.

I think it's worth a try both to see if it acts as a deterrent and also to see whether the public really want it. Otherwise this issue is going to dominate the political headlines for years to come.

A detention camp isn’t going to stop the people running off the beach, and into a taxi etc on route to a car wash. Ready to pay back the money lent to enable it.
