Id appreciate if you have an unopened bag of sugar(1,2 or 5 kg ) could you pop it on the scales and report back the weight and brand
Ive had an eye opener just lately.
TIA

I have some precise scales, upon which I used to measure out the sugar, when making wine - I always used to get a few over, around 1,002 to ,1,005. I gave up bothering to weight them, they were accurate enough, WHY?

I buy a fair amount a year for my livestock but lately silver spoon 1and 2 kg are coming in at 750g and 1500 g respectively.
Its not my scales as the 5kg is reading 5042g and other products read near the amount.

A 25% underfill is a hefty discrepancy given the amount I have to buy especially given the price increases.
I know the "e" mark allows a tolerance but that much is surely beyond reason.
If other people are finding the same Ill start chasing it.
These packs were all from one supplier btw.

Such a wide variation, would be fairly obvious in your hand, or simply looking at the size of the fill in the pack, so I would suggest there just has to be a fault in your scales.

this is in the hobbies section - can weighing sugar really be a hobby ?

have some self raising flour (its a similar thing) from sainsbury's weighing in at 502g - (including the bag) says 500g on on the package, assumed that meant 500g net - but clearly not - seems like the bag is getting weighed in too

Put a litre of water in a plastic jug and weigh it. If it turns out about a kilo on your scales it would seem they're accurate enough - perhaps raise a complaint with silver spoon and offer to send a video of you weighing a litre of water and then an unopened pack of "1kg" sugar, see can they offer an explanation

Do you see variances if you don't tare your scales?

just weighed a 500g tate & lyle granulated sugar and it came in at 509g inc bag

out of curiosity what sort of livestock do you feed sugar to, and what sort of sugar (granulated white sugar?)

Looks like a mistake in the factory with the bags. Fire off an email to trading standards, copied to SIlver Spoon.

Well, maybe give em a chance to address it first, before copying the CEO into an argument about the water cooler that might not even happen..
