Hi all

Have been reading many posts about pumping over into FE tank. One solution often given is to raise height of expansion pipe in loft, and forming an inverted U into tank.

Because of the location of location of airing cupboard and pipe work, any increase in height of expansion pipe would necessitate running it at a diagonal, (along the pitch of the roof rafters), before bending vertically to the FE tank.

Are there any issues that I may be unware of regarding running pipe diagonally?

Many thanks in advance.

Thank you so much for swift reply, dextrous. It was something I had not encountered on this site or elsewhere. Will maybe set to it tomorrow. Thanks!

Just keep it in 22mm pipe.

The FE tank shouldn't be above the Cold Water tank though :!:

Only other thing that springs to mind is to insulate it - especially where it gets so close to the roof tiles, 'cos it will be permanently full of water up to the height of the top of the water level in the tank :!:

If pumping over takes place, it is either incorrect plumbing or blockage (if feed and vent are on the flow pipe before the pump).

It is pointless going to the expense of raising the height of the vent as during HW heat only, pump over still likely to take place.

You said likely not to work therefore stating that there's a chance it will work - so the task is not pointless.

Depending how high you can go I would say it's very much worth a go.

I would prefer to fix a problem instead of sweeping it under the carpet.

Have seen convoluted pipe runs to 'defeat' pumpover but in the end proper fix is what will be cure it. Inverted pipe need not be more than 450mm above the surface of the water.

Thanks for replies - I am following with interest.

Interesting point, DP: the highest point of the vent pipe was 150mm above water level.

Before embarking on the extension of the vent pipe, I followed ChrisR's advice in a previous pumping over posting: reduce the level water level in the expansion tank. It worked! Even on pump speed 2, I was getting a little overflow into a cup hung over the vent pipe. After a day's normal usage it has remained empty. Am now trying pump speed 3....
