I'm currently updating my kitchen and bathroom plumbing as it's not been touched since it was built around the 1950's and is quite dilapidated - it's mostly lead pipe and some has already broken. I live on the ground floor of a block of flats. Currently both the kitchen sink and bath waste pipes are connected to what I assume is some sort of vent pipe that dissappears into the wall. However, I've been told that I don't need to connect into these vent pipes and there are modern anti-syphon alternatives...? Can anyone let me know what these are and if they are as effective? I'm new to plumbing and can't afford to get this done professionally so hope someone can help...

In the bathroom - it's a lead pipe that connects to the lead bath and sink waste pipe. From this waste pipe it goes upwards and into the wall. I can't tell where it goes after this. Dia is about the same as the waste pipes - 1 3/4 inch.
In the kitchen - the 'vent' pipe comes out of the wall diagonally downwards, then it curves round in a big loop and heads back into the wall below where it came in, it then goes through the wall and connects to the stack. At the far side of this loop the kitchen sink waste pipe connects into it.
The kitchen and bathroom are adjacent rooms and on the outside of these both are two stacks. One is clearly waste and is where both waste pipes end up. The other stack looks seldom used (conclusion drawn after removing inspection cover). I assume the 'vent' pipes come out of this but it's difficult to check it as they're in the wall...! There is no real evidence for this though.

Rip it all out and put in new solvent weld, with the sink waste from kitchen upper most, new antivac traps to sink, basin and bath.
