The house I've just moved into with young family has an antique wooden kitchen floor. It's lovely.

I asked the previous owner what they did to maintain it and they said they used 'Bourne Seal' - not the synthetic kind... or not the non-synthetic kind - can't remember which way around.

In places the varnish is wearing out and I suspect it won't be long before bare wood is exposed and I presume that will start to take up spills and general day to day dirt which is unavoidable with two kids charging about on it.

The 'proper' thing to do I suspect is to empty the kitchen, sand, varnish, leave 24 hours and then repeat.

But I'd need to relocate my entire family in order to do that.

Any clever alternatives? Any thoughts/advice?

Thank you!!

When it comes to varnished or lacquered (different names for the same product) floors, you've not really got much option but to sand and reseal. Some manufacturers offer refresher products but these need to key to a clean topcoat of lacquer and so no real benefit to you if patches of bare wood exposed. Best manufacturers for these I've found are Bona or Pallman, and if you do go for the reseal, they both offer water based lacquers which require 2-3 coats, each drying in four or five hours. Feasible to get the job done over a weekend!
