Solid Wood Floor Finish

Hi,

After lifting an old carpet in our new house we've uncovered the original five finger mosaic parquet solid wood floor which looks like either teak, mahogany or possibly dark oak. It appears to have been originally varnished but is scratched and worn through to the bare wood in some places and also needs a couple of local repairs which I can do by swapping some of the squares around. I'm therefore planning to sand the whole floor back to bare wood again and re-finish it.

What's the current thinking on the best way to finish this type of floor? In previous houses I've always used polyurethane varnish on wooden floors but I've been looking at some of the hardwax oils such as Osmo Polyx or Fiddes hard wax oil and am wondering if these might be better? It's for a fairly busy family home with young children and will include the floor in the hall so needs to be fairly durable!

A few years ago someone convinced me to use ronseal floor varnish.
It looked beautiful at first but it got marked pretty quickly.
It seems that any rubbing makes the varnish opaque and looks like the floor is scratched.
Next time I will stick to yacht varnish.

We have timber floors throughout most of house.
Attached pic is probably hardest worked floor in house
Utility room boots dogs grandkids you name it.
Now over 3 years old had 3 coats of osmo polyx raw just kept clean since.
