Ok here's the deal. I've got a chess game for the pc. I was just looking through some of the tutorials and was looking at the promoting part (where you can exchange a pawn for another piece).
It set this scenario and asked what was the best piece to change the pawn for in c7. It gave you 4 options: queen, bishop, rook, knight. Now to my mind, there's no point promoting to either a bishop or a rook when a queen can do both jobs. Anyway to cut the story short it said the rook was the best piece to change to. Can anyone shed any light on this cause I can't see why it wouldn't have chosen the queen?

If you choose a queen, then black can't move on its next move and it's not in check so its stalemate (a draw)

If you choose a rook, black king can move A6 (its only move) then next move white gets mate (rook to A8 )

A bit sneaky

Ah that explains it, thanks noodlz. You'd have thought it might have explained that as it's in the tutorial section.
You just became my chess guru.

I can't see the pieces very well but if that is the Black King Just move your queen to B6 and the black king is checkmated.

You're right about not being able to see the pieces very well...also first thought they were both queens (as the nun said of the bishops), but they're both kings.

Cheers gcol  ...chess is good exercise for the mind, some people do take it very seriously though....you'll see

Yeah, but the whole idea is that it's a tutorial about "promoting". :D I know how to play, It's just been a long time since I did and I've gone really rusty. Played an online game with a mate on Sunday morning - he beat me and he's a blo*dy painter!
