I live in a first floor maisonette, my stair case comes straight up into my living room. I was hoping to put down a wooden or laminate floor in my living room at some point in the next few months.

The stairs are wooden treads on a concrete structure and have a wall on each side. The stairs are currently carpeted the same as the living room.

What would I do about the stairs in this situation? I would think that laminate on stairs would be lethal if you come in with wet shoes, yet I don't think that carpeted stairs would really go with the look of the property plus there is the risk of tripping on a threshold strip at the top of the stairs.

So, what is usually done in this situation? Is it safe to use real wood treads with no covering on?

i've seen laminate used in stairs but it does leave them resembling a shops steps! You loose the roundness of the edge on the treads as they are boxed around
You could varnish/wax and have a runner up the middle to walk on to prevent slipping. (? ?)
