Have moved into old flat, and light switches and sockets are all surface mounted boxes with lath and plaster walls. Not particularly minded to be replacing everything with flush, with all the hassle of cutting holes in lath and plaster (and ending up with a bunch of repairs). But will be redecorating. Was wondering if anyone has ever come across supplier of coloured (not blinking white!) surface mount boxes ... or can they be painted in a way that looks decent?

Flush them in. It's the only way they'll ever look right.

Lath and plaster is not too hard to flush accesories in to if you're careful.

Anyway, what's it matter if you do a bit of damage when you plan to redecorate anyway?

Flush them in, or you'll regret it for ever.

You can get sleeves that fit over a 30mm surface box in polished chrome or brass. did a job a few years ago and i bought them from TLC online

Agree with trying to flush them in.

The sockets can be situated just on top of the skirting board to minimise damage, but would look better a little higher.

It's easier to fit the box where the stud (upright) is, and chissel a bit out to accomodate the box.

If you're lucky, you may be able to fix a 16 mm box direct to the laths in the case of light switches. However, 25 mm boxes are best to accomodate dimmers and a lot of wires.

I suspect some of the walls will be brick.
