Hello

Since recently moving into a flat, I've noticed an occasional unpleasant odour. I've just noticed that inside the hot water tank cupboard, which is beside the shower/toilet room, there's what seems to be a vent pipe, with the open end of the pipe inside the cupboard. There's a 6cm pipe running from the floor to the ceiling of the cupboard, and the apparent vent pipe runs off it - the latter initially runs horizontally, and then goes vertically up, with the corner consisting of a U-bend:

Do you think that this is indeed a waste pipe vent pipe? It's certainly the source of the odour, although the smell isn't being constantly emitted.

And would I be right in thinking that the open end of vent pipes should always be outside the building?!

Thanks in advance for any advice.

That`s a standpipe for a washing machine  the trap has probably dried out - therefore the smells .if it`s redundant you could cap off the horizontal part with a solvent weld socket and access cap . the standpipe is probably not the correct size /type of plastic to solvent weld to

Washing machine standpipe which will dry out if not used. Keep it filled with water or preferably remove it.

Thanks very much both - I've filled-up the trap with water for now, and will ask the agent to cap the pipe.
