I want to replace my bannisters, but the existing ones have a large post at the end running from floor to ceiling and the others run from the ceiling and are secured to the side of the stairs. I want to know how I can tell if the large post and/or any of the other posts are load bearing as I want to replace them with ones which do not run from the ceiling? Also, if they are, what options do I have?

where ever you have a change off direction or landing you must support the joins fully either to a wall on a wall down to the floor up to the floor/ceiling

a picture will help

?????????? Wrong Big-All The newel post only needs fixing to the stair string properly. There are countless thousands of staircases up and down the country that don't have newel posts running from floor to ceiling.

It may well be that the OP has a staircase that isn't supported where it changes direction, in which case the posts may well be structural

Have a look at the 3rd picture down on the left.
