Ariston 27 MFFI 3 way valve repair

Hi All
I am in the process of replacing my faulty 3 way valve with a repair kit. All was going fine until I came to put the retaining clip on the small pipe that goes into the back of the 3 way valve and runs round the back of the secondary heat exchanger.
I can see that it clips on the valve and over the lip / shoulder of the pipe, but I cant see how it can retain the pipe and not leak. Any help would really be gratefully received, thank you.

There is an O ring that sits in a groove at the end of the narrow copper bypass tube. This is pushed into the orifice on the 3 way body and the clip stops the pipe ftom separating from the body.
