The formula for working out the number of permutations of a string of numbers (or characters) is N (to the power of n-1)

[Why can't we do superscripts (& subscripts)? Or if we can will someone explain to me, please.]

So Merry Christmas has 14 characters but 2 of them are duplicated ( R & S)
So the formula is 12 (to the power of 12-1) = 12 (to the power of 11) = 743,008,370,688

Anybody agree?

Oops...wrong formula!!!

The correct formula is N! divided by (L1! X L2!)

where N is the number of letters
! is the factorial ( N X (N-1) X (N-2) X (N-3) etc)
And L is the duplicated letters L1, L2 etc.

So the formula is 14! divided by 2! X 2! (the factorial of 2 is 2 (L1 X (L1-1))

= 87,178,291,200 X 4

= 21,794,572,800

Still don't wanna type it out!
