Artex ceiling...smooth finish (painted)

Hi all

Can an diy person artex a ceiling to leave a smooth finish

We had our living room artexed and the guy just used a roller to put the artex on which looked easy the skill cam when he started to make shapes

Can the artex just be rolled on over new plasterboard and left as a smooth finish to be painted

Any ideas
