artex walls

I have artexed walls going up the stairs which I want to remove. The house dates back from the late 1940's and I've heard a rumour that the material once used for atexing contained asbestos. I had originally planned to knock the sharp points off and sand it down but obviously, I dont want to start that if asbestos is involved.

I would use 'Artex Skimcoat'.
