I would like to get a sample tested and I would be grateful if anyone could help/advise thanks.

Well google's ok but I was wondering if anyone had some expertise in that area, that said I now having a sample tested.

catlad, Hi.

ASBESTOS? not to be taken lightly at all under any circumstances whatsoever. inhale some fibres now and it could give a painful death in 10 /15/30/ 40 years time, it is the way that stuff works.

Your post does not say if the Asbestos has been located in a Domestic or Commercial property?

In general terms there are 3 types of this material, white, brown, and the most dangerous [by a mile] is Blue.

The procedure in general is, a material that may be Asbestos is located, this material is tested, the result will come back as "NAD" - NO ASBESTOS DETECTED. or the result will tell you if the sample is white / brown / blue but using some words such as Chrisotile and other such.

Should the sample tested prove "Positive" then removal or as
" encapsulation" is needed

Removal can be undertaken by operatives trained to use appropriate PPE, the degree of PPE required is dependant on what type of Asbestos is being removed.

DISPOSAL ? to a landfill site, this is where the "MANDOTORY REGULmandatoryick in, once removed the Asbestos MUST be placed in a coloured thick polythene bag, this bag is then placed inside another similar bar. both bags are sealed, and a notice attached to the outer bag that it contains Asbestos.

These bags are then placed in to a Skip that can be sealed, that is a covered Skip. The skip can then with "PRIOR APPROVAL OF THE LOCAL AUTHORITY" be transported to the approved disposal site.

The so called "PAPER TRAIL" associated with the disposal must be completed in full that is a Specialised contractor has to be accredited and complete the paperwork to ensure that the disposal has been undertaken totally.

For more information PLEASE contact your local Authority and have a look at the Health and Safety web site [In my opinion this site only provides details of Commercial property? ? or I may be missing something on this site?]

Sorry to "go on a bit" but it is a Death sentence in waiting to get this wrong?

Ken

Thanks for all the info. I have been asked to replace some garage roofs which were built in the early 80's and look like they could be aspestos on the outside they are full of moss but on the inside they look grey in colour.

Blah, blah, blah.....we're all gonna die, there is asbestos in the air! Quick, everyone grab a mask!

catlad, hi again.

You mention Moss on the roof?

One Seminar I went to strongly "Advised" that the Moss be left on the roof [wherever possible] this because, the Moss where it has attached itself to the roof covering "Could" when removed tear away some of the Asbestos and in doing so release the Fibres into the air.

There are H & Safety "guidelines" issued by Local Authorities / Health and Safety themselves about how to handle Cement bound Asbestos sheeting.

to be on the safe side a phone call to the Local Authority in the area will do two things, ONE it will alert them to the fact that the material is being handled. Why do this? a "Concerned" Local Resident may object and call the Council. TWO because the Council will be accepting the Asbestos, it is advisable to get their "Procedures" correct.

For example, in one of the areas I work in Asbestos disposal can only be undertaken on certain days of the week and at certain times all of which have to be Pre-Agreed with the Council.

When I was a kid we used to light fires and put aspestos on to watch it explode! all good fun when you are young  Ken I Have taken aspestos to the council tips before and I will not be cleaning it before I dump it I just wanted to establish if was aspestos. I,ve had the result back today. (component) cement (result) chrysotile. Thanks for all the info.

noseall, Hi.

Yes I think I know where you are coming from, a lot of people state that for example "White" Asbestos is not dangerous? fine I hope that is true?

Unfortunately, the Health and Safety guys, as well as the Courts may take a different view?

I for one do not like the prospect of having to answer in a court of law, either up here in Scotland or indeed anywhere in the UK. to a charge led by the Health and Safety Commission? do you? ?

I have been a "spectator" in Scottish Courts when a charge was being heard brought by the HSE, I wHSEpresent because I was actually working within a particular court undergoing a make-over and was advised of several HSE prosecutions. All I can say is that HSE and the courts do not take PRISONERS?

If we have a look at what work MUST be undertaken by a "Competent Person or firm" then we are looking at "Electrical installations" - Gas final installations - and Asbestos removal.

The above are some of the most "high profile" aspects of the work that MUST be undertaken by competent firms and persons, failure to comply will result in a Prosecution being levelled.

Bottom line, do not chance it, unless you want to face a Judge [or up here a Sherriff]

catlad, Hi.

The result indicates Asbestos.

It MUST be treated accordingly, NO exceptions.

Contact your Local Authority and find out how they want to handle it

Please do not cut corners do it right or you could be facing a Judge !

Ken.

Do not contact your local authority.

If you must, get a licenced assy gang to deal with it.

You are more likely to die from breathing in second hand smoke or inner city air.

My workmate died at 61 from Mesothelioma and we only ever worked with "safe" white asbestos from time to time.
