Attaching a Gate to pebbledash

I wish to put up a gate to block off the alley between the house and the outhouse. Both of these are pebble-dashed. How do I attach the gate posts to the wall? Do I need to remove the pebble dash first?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, since I'm not very DIY-minded!

you don't necessarily need to remove all the material, but if you can remove the stones or smooth out the surface then you will have greater success.

if you are fixing a batten of say 50mm or thicker, i would suggest using fischer fixings or similar. these can be bought in lengths above 100mm and are ideal for fixing thicker timber battens or posts.
