We are going to be extending our 2 bed bungalow including a conversion in the original attic and the attic space created in the extension. The new extension attic will almost double the original roof space.
The original rafters and joists are 50x80mm.
As we need to beef everything up in the original roof and are dramatically altering the roof construction maybe we would be better to replace the entire roof instead. Is this common practice? Or is it normal practice to try and work with what is already there?
It seems standard in attic conversions to put in RSJs and suspend the new joists between, however if we are having an entirely new cut roof would we still require these? The span wall plate to wall plate is 6.4m with a supporting wall halfway between.
We're preparing the drawings for a structural engineer.
