Austin Rover

Did the MG Maestro have a VW planetary gearbox?

The later Maestro MG had an 'O' series 2.0 litre with an end-on Honda-designed PG1 series gearbox as used in the Monty. This gearbox has five-speed constant mesh with helical gears for speed transmission and final drive. This car ****ed all over the earlier 'R' series 1.6 with the Golf GTi 'box. This box was not quite as good as the same box fitted to the Golf, as BL used their own linkages to connect it up.

SHP 549R was driven by Michael Edwardes.
(Photos of SHP 549R courtesy of AROnline)

TMK 428Y (registered 3/5/83) has a very awkward conversion to estate, the lines are much cleaner on LOE 99P (registered 17/2/76) and SHP 549R (registered 20/1/77).

I can see styling cues on SHP that appeared on the Monty Estate nearly 8 years later.

Not just paint....doors, trim, interior panels, etc, etc.....

Glad I'm not the only Brit car anorak on here. Really into my P4, P5, P6s and SD1s. Sold my P4 few years ago, due to nagging. Down to just a rare, early shape Carlton at present. Really want a P6B coupe or 3500 Vitesse.

I had a P6 with the Buick engine. Nice car - but as SS says...

When it came time to get rid of it, I just took off the wings - no tools necessary - and swept up the rest.

[drool]I lust after a Lotus Carlton/ Omega.[/drool]

But I once had a '79 Opel Rekord 2 litre Auto in Royal Blue (PMA705V), just like this one.

Thanks to clarkey from opelgt.com forum for the Rekord pic.

I also want another 'sud. Mine (TGL 478S) looked like this (sometime after my ownership, it was resprayed purple...dunno which was the better colour!)

However, as I cannot drive anymore, owning these, unless I have:

a) dosh aplenty
b) storage and
c) a track to drive them on

is pie in the sky.:(

I've got a Rover P63500s hibernating in my garage and on my dog walk route there's Anglia 105e 1600GT, a Mk 9 Jaguar, a Sunbeam Tiger, a 1968 Mini Cooper , MGR V8 ,TR6 and V12 E Type. All except mine in good running condition.

That estate was mine back in 1990's - I took the photos outside my house . You have never seen such a rotten car. On it's very last MOT when I got it - the engine was shot, knocked and laid a smokescreen behind. The sills had been replaced with galv. steel sheet cut from a cattle trough, by one owner who was a farmer. I was tempted to keep the conversion parts but sold the whole thing to an enthusiast - probably not restored yet, but certainly one of a kind.

The side shot of the wooden trim, you mean?

You are nicely framed in the wing mirror!

No , there's a couple of pics showing the back of my car with the boot open - somewhere on that link:unsure: but not that sidetrim one - . Right - go to website click on "cars" drop down and click on "conversions" the estate pics will appear(y)

That makes sense. As the engine gets older and weaker, the bodywork automatically gets lighter. Seriously, really nice car and bags of power, smooth, effortless power. The best thing though, was the sound of the engine. Even on tick over. No finer sound than the burble of a V8.

Had the Carlton version of yours (1981 X 2000cc manual), basically the same car but built in Luton, not Germany. Few detail differences, but very similar. Great car and tough as old boots. Bought mine as an 11 year old banger, and it lasted me another 11 years until too rusty. Got an immaculate MK2 now ( 1986 D 2200 CDI auto). Basically the same shell but lots of detail changes, most noticeable the plastic bumpers. The extra 200cc and fuel injection makes a big difference over the carb'd older model.

The old one and her replacement -
