Hi,

For the past couple of weeks our downstairs toilet makes a droning noise after its been flushed. The drone continues until the cistert refills to its correct level. Right as the valve closes the water supply off the drone lessens in intensity / volume.

Its been fine since we bought the house 4 years ago although did start briefly once before and then went on its own accord.

It has to be something to do with the valve in the cistern but am I overlooking something before I go rip it apart or replace?

Cheers

replace float ooperated valve which lives in the toilets cistern

id also check as a precaution the cold main that goes to the cistern for correct clipping of the pipe.

Thanks for your fast responses, that's appreciated.

This will be another job on the list to sort out.

Cheers

If you're DIYing it then just replace the washer, and possibly the seat (depending on the brand of valve).

Today I tried to change the washer in the float operated valve but the plastic nut holding it all together was completely seized, I guess with limescale.

Anyway, whilst looking at this I have decided to replace the old Derwent Macdee "Metro" 3 part syphon. I've looked everywhere on the net to find one and have come to the conclusion this company no longer exists.

Checking online with B&Q, Wickes and Screwfix leads me to the usual brands but all but one I have found says it is used for an 1" to 1.5" outlet.

I've taken my cistern off now and the old syphon has a pipe diameter of approx 1.75". This means I require a 2" outlet hole in the cistern but finding a syphon to fit this is hard. Our downstairs loo has the conventional front handle fitting.

This may be a daft quesion but would it be ok to fit a standard 1" to 1.5" syphon or flush valve in my cistern?

Alternatively I was thinking of this Fluidmaster part and then ditch the push button part.

What is my best route here?

Thanks

Fluidmaster gets my vote.

Very simple but clever bit of kit.
Used all over the world.

Andy.
