Hi folks,

I am looking to renovate staircase and was hoping to clad the existing newel posts however after measuring them, I found they are rectangular (90mm x 80mm) and not square, I cannot seem to find any parts online for this - every website offers square post parts only.

Has anyone came across a similar issue? Not sure the best way to approach this now.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

If you can’t find pre-made cladding, you could have custom cladding made from wood or MDF to match the size of the posts.

A joiner can create cladding specifically designed to fit the rectangular shape of your newel posts.

They can either wrap it around or build a custom cover for each post.

Or you can get square cladding parts and modify your existing posts by adding filler strips on the sides to make the posts effectively square but it depends if your good at woodworking.

not quite sure exactly what you are trying to acheive
iff its to clad with say oak slips and they come in at 90mm then pad out the 80 with 3mm mdf/harboard/plyx3 or whatever ??

Yeah, I did consider both of these options. I think I would rather try enlarge them to 90 x 90 mm square as they look slightly odd with the shape they are now. Definitely food for thought - thanks!

What I was trying to "achieve" was cladding the newel post. We have just recently moved into this house and the banister is needing a makeover. I assumed the post would be square but when we got in and I measured, it was not. You get various cladding packs now from online stores specifically for staircases but they are all pre-machined for square newel posts only, putting me in a slight predicament. So, I figured my safest bet would be to ask this forum as the responses are usually very helpful.
