Hi thanks for everybody's help with my soldering the job went great in the end. I just had to calm down a bit, ease up on the blow torch but I couldn't do it without your tutoring cheer! but its not over yet. My next plumbing odyssey is a leaky close coupled toilet any clue's Q are gate valves designed to totally stop the flow of water? If they don't why not? Confused of East Sussex

Gate valves are designed for full bore low pressure systems, the quality of them varies. some will hold but most will weep at mains pressure.
If you close them too tightly you will bend the spindle, and when you come to open up again it will leave the gate behind.
