Hi thanks for everybody's help with my soldering the job went great in the end. I just had to calm down a bit, ease up on the blow torch but I couldn't do it without your tutoring cheer! but its not over yet. My next plumbing odyssey is a leaky close coupled toilet any clue's Q are gate valves designed to totally stop the flow of water? If they don't why not? Confused of East Sussex

Gate valves really belong in the age of steam (enter stage right F. Dibnah esq).
They don't have a washer, but rely on a sluice gate system which may, or may not seal completely.
Best to use a full bore Balofix type with an off/on lever, but for a loo a small bore will do fine. You can get service valves which have an end that screws directly onto the fill valve.
John :)
