Back boiler - is this working right?

You still need to make sure there is an intact spreader fitted. I know this is not easy but having 'been there done that' I still think this is your problem.
Just to add some more info to my additional post. My boiler ran silent for years and years, I then had a problem with the header tank, the heat exchanger overheated and leaked everywhere. The heat exchanger was removed and the gasket between it's 2 halves was replaced and the HE was re-fitted. Property was now not visited by me for many months but when I did visit I heard the very load banging. I though this was a new problem. As explained, I then tried many things and we eventually took the HE back out and found a smashed spreader (likely happened when the HE was repaired).
Engineer said it wasn't needed anyway, he was wrong. Replaced the broken spreader and the boiler has now been running silent for 3 years.

It was replaced by a gas safe plumber who i know through a friend. Was changed a month ago.
I had a quick go at balancing the rads two days ago, and the boiler has been much quieter, rads are good temps and water is still hot, so could having all the rads open (i didnt open them like that, already like this) have put excess stress on the boiler?
And this could have been my problem the whole time??
Excuse my ignorance but can you put a pic up of a spreader? Then i will know if theres one there or not.

The bit that matters is inside the heat exchanger so can not be seen.

Your early post said that the pump stops running but the boiler carries on firing!
That should NOT happen. Its difficult to imagine why that should be occurring and the first thing to check is that the call for heat is correctly wired. Normally thats in parallel with the pump so the call for heat goes off at the boiler at the same time as the pump!
If that were correct and the gas really does carry on burning with no call for heat that that indicates a dangerously faulty gas valve!
