Back Boiler Quick Questions

Hi

I have a back boiler stove With 2 pipe connections at the back.

Is the top pipe connector for the hot water outflow and the bottom for the colder water return from the heating system?

Should the water pump be taking hot water out of the boiler to upstairs or pumping returned water in?
