Hello

I am in the process of replacing my fire and firelplace in my new home (well new to me), I had a corgi registered guy come round to put the first part of the piping for the new fire to allow us to fit the fire place.

He gave me the bad news that there is a back boiler behind the plating that held the old surface fitted gas fire. The boiler hasn't been used for what must be close to 10-15 years

He told me it needed toaking out, now I know it,s not connected to anythng because all the old central heating pipes have been cut and some removed, we also need to make the hole for the fire slightly wider which means removing some brcks, I have been and got a metal bar about 4 inches wide and 1\2 an inch thick to act as a lintle.

I was planning to drill a hole at the lowest point of the boiler to drain any water off and then unbolt as much as I can and cut out the rest, blanking any pipes or holes along the way, apparently the flue liner is ok.

Can anyone offer me any advice on removing the boiler and widening the hole as it's not a job I have done before.

Thanks

Jon

Cover the furniature and hang dust sheets, there will be a load of soot falling once you get going.

Some (glowworms I think) have bolts down to floor, many don't.

Most have to be lifted at the front so flue spigot can tilt back and down to get it out from under lintel (if there is a lintel, many were fitted by off duty firemen). Boiler should have already been drained down, pipes cut and blocked or capped, and gas should already be capped off.

Detaching flue spigot from flue liner is hardest part, usually gets torn to pieces in frustration in the end.

As the wrestling mach ensues large amounts of soot waft out into the room.

Actual cast iron part isn't bad to handle compared to most other cast iron floor standers, though you will need a friend to lift it outside with you.
