Many backboilers, like a lot of open vent boilers, are sludged up to the hilt. Few of them are maintained as required

sounds like a possible blockage

if you have a mid position valve make sure you have manually opened it whilst trying to fill the system also make sure the htg pump is turned off also

now that i have drained the system and still cannot fill the rads
should i take out the boiler and try to flush through
or would it be better to try and get someone to powerflush
this for regards colin

you need to locate where the cold feed pipe(pipe from header tank that fills system) connects to your system, then cut it at this point and check for blockages, this is the most likely cause. Have some towels and clothes at the ready ;)

thanks for that i belive i have done this ? because the small 15 mm
pipe that comes from the header tank ,comes down the wall into
the living room tees off into the boiler .which is where i have cut off
and also where this pipe comes down .there is a drain valve where
i drained down originally :(
regards colin

so if you cut this pipe does any water come down from the tank?

hello its me again i have managed to de sludge my back boiler
and got it going again but the header tank seems to be surging
constantly and not settling is this normal or could there be something else wrong regards colin

If you mean its pumping over that indicates a blockage in the pipework on the pumped side.......you need the system properly flushed, preferably with a machine.......

Are you going to tell us how you desludged it?
