Hi all,

Over the past couple of months, I've noticed that our downstairs toilet lets off a bad smell when the water in the basin is disturbed, i.e., you take a whizz in it it chucks up a bad drain-like smell. There doesn't appear to be a blockage as it flushes fine. The soil pipe for the toilet runs a short distance outside into the main soil stack and there doesn't appear to be any blockage there or in the manhole they run into.

I've tried flushing the toilet through with caustic soda a few times and this eases up the smell for a day or two but then the same smell returns.

Any suggestions?

OK. If it was basin I'd say check the overflow for gunge... Worth doing this anyway.
Is the water in the bowl clear/clean looking or tinged?
What state is the pan connector in?

Water is clear pan connector is in good nick, the toilet was installed circa 6 years ago so it is relatively new in toilet life!

Having seen some pics from the plumbers here depicting the scale build up in hidden areas - do you short flush after a wizz ? probably a good habit ;)

haha the answer is yes! My guess is its a hidden build up given no clear blockage issues. Any suggestions on a product that helps clear through (assuming the standard ones in the supermarket are not industrial enough!)
