Badly fitted toilet - Advice needed

Well you could just wrap the spigot with hessian tape impregnated with boss white and ram the whole lot into the gap. Not something I would recommend but it's something you could do yourself without having to get the owners 'tradesmen' involved.

Have you tried to clean your hands after pipe wrapping with Denso Tape? If so, you will know what a bastard stuff impregnated tape is. I was forced to use it once, but never again.

Here's a kit, with the silicone missing: You also need a coin.

WHat you do is put the screws through the bit of placcy with the hole in shove the screws through the china - which has a funnel-shaped entry to the hole, and do the screws up.
That distorts the placcy bit with the hole in, so the cap doesn't shut.
So you back off the screw a bit so the cap fits,
but that means the fixing isn't tight.
So you react, needing to put the coin in the swear-box.

Then decide whether you're going to use just the top half of the decorative placcy thing, or both halves maybe after you've made the hole big enough to go OVER the screw head.
And you stick it on with a smoothed dob of the silicone.

C'mon, we've all been there.

@Justin Passing LOL, yes! Which is why I only use brass screws with a hemp gromet cushion under the heads. Standard brass screws have a slight taper to them and a decent sized head for a good fixing(y) Actually, that should read used to use as I'm an old codger now and can't easily bend down low and have to rely on excellent tradesmen of my choosing for the low jobs

I've never used hemp for that. Hemp's for working with boss-white on long-screw gas fittings, no?
Whoever put the bog in at my parents' used TAP WASHERS under the screw heads. Big ugly black things, , looked lurvly. Same for the mirror - chrome domed tops, black tap washer under o_O

I had a supply of decent special screws, something like the ones in post #64 with the shaft into the hole, which gave a decent chance.. It was a company called Antares, I don't know if they're still going. They made fixings for all sorts, like basins, cisterns and bogs. they were always hard to deal with, but the stuff is widely avilable now

etc.

Kids there days, they got it easy, innit.

May be. I was an early convert to loctite string, super stuff. I never knew of using hemp with a woodscrew - but it makes sense.
I never used putty-and-paint either, there ARE limits!

Now, where's the silver sand so I can bend that pipe......

Well I certainly wouldn't recommend using Denso tape in that situation.
