I am looking at buying a lovely victorian terraced house. It was originally 2 bedrooms but has been extended to 3 beds. It also has a large basement but unfortunately, this only has a ceiling height of 5' 6"

Not being a hobbit I would need a normal ceiling height in order to use the basement. I suppose 6' 6" would be OK but what I need to know is would it be possible to dig down another foot or so to give me more headroom or is this a structural no-no?

sounds a marvelous idea, dig down, just like the bloke in the paper did, to find no footings (very old house) walls caved in, house collapsed

cheap answer stand in a portable hole

or get structural engineer in.

do NOT go and dig with out advice first
