Little while ago I had downlights fitted in a bathroom. They are the covered variety. How do you access the bulbs and also clean the 'glass' enclosure. Do they screw / pull or ??. Realise this is basic query but since they were installed by someone else I simply don't know and want to avoid damaging the ceiling or fitting.

Depends on the make/model.
Many of the ones without the spring clip just pull out (the middle part, not the outside bit) They are held in with a couple of sprung ball bearings.

Some of them you twist the central part.

thanks - but there is no 'middle part'. Just the glass cover within a single steel housing that fits into the ceiling.

Try twisting it or gently pulling it down (maybe get small screwdriver behind cover). The lights will most prob be held in the ceiling with two sprung 'arms' which need a bit of force to pull down, so don't be scared to being too butch!

Hmm
but there is no 'middle part'

Usually you can get at the lamp without taking out the whole fitting.
Are these 'shower' lights with the lamp recessed up inside the fitting?
If so, then just pull gently on the housing and it should come away leaving the lamp holder and surround in the ceiling.

Once you've got one out you'll see how its done ;)

Or post a pic if you're still stuck.
