basic question and it may sound stupid - if you fit a basin waste without using sealant/putty would it leak a bit? even if the washer/backnut was done up tight?

If it's the type which has a soft rubber gasket then it will usually not leak but if it's one of the older hard washer type you will need sealant - i often use clear silicone . hope that helps

ok thanks for that. yep the washer is a hard clear plastic type (like a polywasher for a cold water tank! so i will use sealant.

Get a basin mate. I originally used silicone when I fitted a new waste but it leaked after a few months. I got a basin mate and it has been 100% leak free ever since. It's probably the best £1 you will ever spend!

to be honest today i tried the basin mate, tightened it up and still a dribble came down the back of the waste outlet. i am thinking plastic waste outlets are very poor compared to metal types? it's only a cheap one and it idn't even come with the basin! ...

I never bother trying to fit plastic plug wastes, just add on cost of a metal one,and fill with silicone as many mfi now suggest.

I pushed it up tighht and tightened it by hand. Couldn't really tighten it much by water pumps as it kept twisting-that and the plug hole did! Any tips on how to get it tighter as it definetely was a less leak than the original washer. Maybe I just need it tighter??

use 2 screwdrivers in the waste to stop it spinning while tightening

can you not hold the bottom of the thread and tighten the nut slightly with your grips.

Thanks I'll go andy it in a bit or maybe tomorrow morning now! I tr a lot of plu, ber's mait putty on it earlier and it didn't work round the waste outlet both sides with the plastic washer - and it is a knightmare getting it aloff again! Took ages! Am thinking I may awell just buy a decent(ish) metal waste outlet?? May be a better seal also.

is it me or are plastic waste outlets rubbish! i tried the basin mate again today, with the polystyrene type washer inside the basin and the black thick washer on the underside with the normal backnut tightehened up underneath it! i did it tight. still a bit of water leaks out between the hole and the black washer - not as bad but still a little dribble , over time it is goin to be annoying!!

should i just get a proper metal waste? or seal under the waste outlet inside the basin instead of the polystyrene washer?

i'd get a metal waste seems that the basin mate is not making a seal around the thread on the waste
