I think this is a classic case of over engineering a solution!! Just change the taps (yup 300 quid) and problem goes away. First a pump, now a check valve, then another pump.......i am sure you'll get it right eventually, just how do you pay for the 3.4 gigawatts of elec to run the pumps.....kidding.
I do think your coming at this from the wrong direction tho.....
