Bath/sink waste

Hi, quick question for someone who knows: I have heard that it is OK to have waste from bathroom sink and bath running at a slight upward incline for a short distance. Is this right or must it be running constanstly horizontal/down?

If it is OK does anyone know the maximum permissible gradient?
