Bath taps

I have an older cast iron bath.
I wish to upgrade the old bath taps with a polished brass block with shower mixer.
I purchased one from screwfix.
Now that I'm ready to do up the bathroom, I checked the distance between centres.
The new block has 6 1/4 inches between centres.
The old taps on the bath are measuring 7 inches between centres.
Whats the story.
I thought (possibly wrongly) that the distance between taps on a bath were all standard.
Is there any way round this other than but brass taps rather than the block?

not sure.
whatever you do you must keep the old taps.
they will be worth a lot of money.
