Bath waste jamming

Hi all,

I have a bath with a standard waste pipe at one end, and a fairly typical 'click-clack' basket plug in it (see first photo below).

My problem is that recently the plug has been getting jammed when I push it down, to block the outlet so I can have a bath. I've ended up having to lever it out with a kitchen knife...

The actual plug seems to be fine, the click-clack works when I push it in my hand after removing it from the bath, the plug moves up and down.

I think the problem is that there is a ridge around the waste pipe itself, about 20-25mm down, which the basket of the plug rests on, so that there's resistance to press the click-clack (and also so the basket doesn't sink right to the bottom LOL!). This ridge seems to have become worn, it's thinned at some points and vanished completely at others (see second photo). So I think the plug is going into the waste pipe 'wonky' when I push it down, and therefore getting jammed.

Does this make sense for you plumbers out there - have you seen this before? Is this likely the problem?

My questions are:

** I think the upper part of the waste pipe (with the worn-out ridge) can only be replaced by unscrewing from underneath the bath, is that correct? There's a panel to get underneath the bath, but it's been tiled and grouted in, so it's going to be a real hassle to get under... it would be great if there was a trick, or a tool, to unscrew it from above!! I've seen a "bath waste removal tool" which has 4 prongs on it, but my waste pipe doesn't seem to have any separators for the prongs to work against?

** What do you even call the upper part (first stage) of the bath waste? Is it possible to replace this by itself, if my bath has an overflow and so presumably a pipe running out of the side of that waste up to the overflow inlet - will that mean the full waste+overflow has to be replaced?

Thanks very much for any help!

The whole thing looks in poor condition ,and at some point will need replacing.
Not sure that anything can be done to keep it working, difficult to work out what is binding.
