Just as an update - I changed this (like for like because I've now got a date for the bathroom being done), but the ducting was filthy on the inside - on the internal side of the fan it was cobwebs, which I expect is fairly normal - but only the other side was evidence that something had been living in there, whilst looking the ducting also gave up the connection (via the pipe) to the outside wall... And the part that was inside the pipe appeared to have been taped up previously too, so I don't imagine that this was ever an effective extraction system!
Lots of leaves, looks like someone made a nest, but hasn't been there in some time - my question is: How on earth do I reattach some fresh ducting on the inside of the pipe? Is it something I should be doing from outside? I am amazed with the wealth of vegetation that the whole thing hasn't sagged and broken over the years.
(also if I ever buy a house again I'm going to ask for a look around their loft and crawl around and poke their ducting)
I'll get the whole thing replaced with the bathroom and done properly, but for now, what's my best options? It doesn't seem to leaking any water currently (and it's a shower free bathroom so not a hard worked fan/duct) but how best to make it secure?
